!I had a great time speaking at Cheltenham Literature Festival with Sir Dermot Turing yesterday. We promoted Alan Turing’s work in mathematical biology to an audience of around 450 people!
The new £50 note
The new £50 note is in circulation and I have mine! I’m very happy to see the phyllotaxis features on the design
We are really lucky that our primary school project has been featured in the Bank’s online exhibit too! You can visit it here (we are on the last page)
Seeker video
Seeker have put “A natural code” on their YouTube channel with an extra interview from the film maker Kriss and myself 🙂
The Turing Pattern Project has launched!

Article press release
See the press release for the paper “Mechanistic home range analysis reveals drivers of space use patterns for a non‐territorial passerine” from the university of Sheffield here
First paper published
Today I reached a first milestone in my PhD studies. Our paper was submitted in the Journal of Animal Ecology after first submitting it in September 2019. We use mathematics to understand how flocks of long-tailed tits live in home range patterns in the Rivelin Valley, Sheffield.
A summary of the paper can be seen in this twitter thread
Article about ‘A Natural Code’
The Faculty of Science wrote this nice article about ‘A Natural Code’
Thanks very much! 😀
Mathematics in primary schools
Recently my colleague Fionntan and I visited some primary schools and asked the students to help us solve Partial Differential Equations numerically to create patterns
These were some tester sessions for a nationwide project we are plotting and we had a great time!
You can see some more photographs of us at Springfield Primary in Sheffield here
and a lovely letter of thank you from one of the students here 🙂
